Belar LP-1A AM Shielded Loop Antenna with Internal Amplifier provides off-air reception for AM broadcast monitoring where electrical noise or an interfering station affects signal quality. Its shielded loop construction reduces electrostatic pickup, while the directional receiving pattern allows suitable off-axis interference to be minimised by rotating the antenna. An amplifier inside the loop frame compensates for reduced loop output.

Directional Reception and Noise Reduction

The Belar LP-1A loop responds to the magnetic component of the incoming signal and has a figure-eight receiving pattern when viewed from above. Correct orientation places the loop plane vertically and towards the desired transmitter. Side nulls can reduce pickup from an unwanted source, although effective rejection depends on the relative directions of the wanted and interfering stations. Shielding helps suppress electrical noise without eliminating every source of interference.

Internal Amplifier and Frequency Selection

Belar LP-1A includes an internal amplifier that the manufacturer describes as providing 30 dB gain to compensate for loop attenuation. This should not be interpreted as 30 dBi antenna gain. Specify the station’s carrier frequency when ordering a tuned antenna, or request the untuned wideband version for 530–1710 kHz reception. The amplifier also isolates the loop from the lead-in cable, supporting longer coaxial runs when properly terminated.

Phantom Power and Installation

The internal amplifier requires DC power supplied through the coaxial lead-in. Use the optional LP-1A phantom power supply or another confirmed compatible powering arrangement. Belar identifies compatible equipment-based alternatives, so a separate supply is not necessarily required when suitable powering is already available. Confirm voltage, connections and any required modifications before installation. The loop uses a BNC RF connection and a 1/2-inch NPT mounting provision.
